Weather Stations
High-precision weather data acquisition for meteorology and research
Wilmers Messtechnik GmbH is a trusted partner for meteorological measurements and weather data acquisition. Our systems are designed to provide accurate and reliable weather data, which is crucial for climate research, weather forecasting and scientific studies. By using state-of-the-art sensors and data loggers, we guarantee the highest precision and reliability, even under extreme weather conditions.
Project Example: Dynamic Line Rating
Weather-dependent overhead line operation, often referred to as Dynamic Line Rating (DLR), adjusts the operating limits of overhead transmission lines according to prevailing weather conditions to maximize transmission capacity while maintaining safe operation. Ambient conditions influence the conductor temperature and therefore its current-carrying capacity. For example, low air temperatures combined with strong winds provide effective convective cooling, allowing overhead lines to safely carry higher currents than under hot, calm conditions.
By combining real-time weather measurements with weather forecasts and thermal models, transmission system operators can dynamically determine the available line capacity. This enables more efficient utilization of existing transmission infrastructure, increases the integration of renewable energy sources, reduces grid congestion, and can defer or eliminate the need for costly network reinforcements, all while ensuring compliance with safety limits such as maximum conductor temperature and ground clearance.
Our DLR weather stations can be mounted near the overhead lines, and capture the ambient conditions that not only allow to determine the current capacity in real time, but also to calculate a prognosis some time ahead.
